“The most effective way to study Korean is to make it fun and be consistent.”

I make it fun by using movies and songs amongst others. Regardless of the reason for you to study Korean, make fun and tailor it to suit you and set your goals.

I study Korean online using https://www.goodjobkorean.com/. I do the lessons and practice and try to make my own sentences with what I have learned. This helps me make my own scheduled pace and give plenty of time to understand each lesson.

What helps me leaning Korean is also watching Korean movies or dramas, and listening to K-pop songs. I usually watch the Korean movies or dramas twice. Second time, without subtitles and try to understand what they are saying. Every 2~3 days I also pick 1 K-pop song where I would read the lyrics and listen to the song and try to translate.

Another way is to give myself homework. There are plenty of exercise books in Korean or reading books. I give myself homework from those books, either reading or exercises. If you are not sure what books fit your level, you can always ask your teacher.

As an extra resource to learn Korean is to use Talk To Me In Korean (TTMIK). TTMIK has plenty of free videos online, listening, reading, and understanding which can help learn on your own.

Apps I use to support my learning are:

TTMIK

Papago (translator)

Duolingo

Instagram

HelloTalk - to find a language partner with which you can practice Korean in a fun way and HelloTalk is a great app to make friends. I have been practicing Korean with my language partner every day for the past 6 months. We teach each other languages.

Since the talks with the language partner are casual and trying to build friendships, this is a great way to learn new vocabulary that you are highly likely to use on a daily basis. You learn a new way of building sentences and new grammar.

One of the most important things in learning a new language is to not be afraid to make mistakes. Making mistakes in the study group or with the tutor or with a language partner is very helpful. As this is a safe environment and the learning process becomes easier.

Other suggestions when learning Korean:

Apps

-Hilokal: Club house-like app for Korean/language learners

-Eggbun

-Teuida

Private tutoring: You will be able to find tutors on Preply or Amazingtalker

Exercise books (paperback): it helps with the writing skills

Record yourself while reading

The key is consistency, practice, make mistakes, be curious and keep yourself motivated.
